Options Abound for Winter Boating

Just because it’s nearing winter in the U.S., don’t give up on enjoying boating in U.S. waters and other close waters. The U.S. is a big country, with plenty of nearby warm-climate boating options that stretch the season for nautical lovers.

Before you go on your winter boating trip, here are some helpful boating tips. First, dress appropriately. Even though the temperatures may be mild during the day, the nights are long and temperatures cool. This means wearing layers so that you can adjust to the changing temperatures. You should also wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun and wind. Sunburn can happen at any temperature.

Another caution for winter boating is the changeability of winter weather. The climate is more in flux in the winter than in the summer. Even in warm climates, the weather can change quickly as cold fronts pass. It is always a good idea to prepare by bringing a jacket, blankets and extra clothing on board. Tides and currents can be more unpredictable in the winter, too, so be aware of them before you depart. You should also check the weather forecast and marine advisories before you head out.

Operating a boat in the winter can require different awareness, too. The wind and waves often are stronger in the winter. A good rule of thumb is to slow down and be more cautious when navigating. Also, have a safety plan in place. Your safety plan should include information on how to contact emergency services as well as what to do in case of an accident. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Personal essentials to bring onboard change in the winter, too. If you don’t have a galley, bring a thermos of hot coffee or tea. This can be a great way to warm up on a cold morning. Pack a picnic lunch. And always bring a first-aid kit and other emergency supplies. This is always a good idea, but it is especially important in the winter.

By following these tips, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable winter boating experience in warm U.S. climates. Now, here are five top winter boating destinations that are in or close to the U.S.:
