Boat Shoes Are Finally Built for Boats

Boat shoes have come a long way in construction, looks, durability and comfort…they actually work now in a marine environment!

The first boat shoes originated in the 1930s with a moccasin-style construction. This means they were made from a single piece of leather that wrapped around the foot, creating a simple, comfortable and durable design. The use of a single piece of leather minimized seams, reducing the risk of water leakage. They had rawhide laces.

These leather boat shoes were wonderful…until they got wet. Then shoes that had been comfortable and gripping became almost a gooey mess when saturated with rain and saltwater. The wet shoes suddenly were dangerously slippery, causing falls and accidents. On top of that, feet became cold and crampy, not helpful when you might be scrambling for your life.

Since then, boat shoes have seen innovations to make them work better on (and off) boats, rain or shine. Innovations include non-marking outsoles. This feature is essential for preventing scuff marks on the boat’s deck and ensuring you have stable footing, especially in wet or slippery conditions. Newer outsoles have excellent grip and traction, even when exposed to water or slippery surfaces. Look for shoes with specially designed rubber or siped outsoles that disperse water and provide a secure grip.

Newer shoes are constructed of quick-drying materials. Wet feet can be uncomfortable and potentially unsafe, so materials like canvas, leather, or synthetic uppers should be water-resistant and designed to shed moisture. A comfortable footbed and proper arch support are essential for long hours on your feet. For boat shoes with laces, ensure the eyelets and laces are rustproof, as they will likely be exposed to water and salt.

Good boat shoes often feature breathable materials to keep your feet cool and prevent moisture buildup. Look for mesh panels or perforations in the shoe’s design. And slip-on boat shoes are convenient, as they are easy to put on and take off, which is especially useful when you need to change footwear quickly or frequently during your boating activities.

Functionality Now Comes with Style

While function is key, boat shoes are also known for their classic, versatile style. They can be worn on and off the boat, so choose a design that suits your personal taste and can transition to casual, everyday wear. After all, you’re also making a statement that you’re a boater.

When making a purchase, consider brands with a strong reputation in boat shoes, such as Sperry, Sebago or Timberland. These brands have a history of producing high-quality, reliable deck shoes. A good boat shoe should be easy to clean and maintain. Look for shoes that can be wiped clean with a damp cloth or brush.

Remember that the choice of boat shoes can also depend on the type of boating activities you engage in. For instance, sailors might prioritize certain features like extra grip and stability, while those using boat shoes for more casual boating or leisure might prioritize comfort and style. Ultimately, the best boat shoe is one that combines functionality with your personal preferences.
